Brazilian Neutrogena Ad Lets You Wipe the Lipstick Right Off This Actress’s Face

Here’s a nifty way to get the average magazine peruser to put a product sample to good use.

Neutrogena and agency DM9DDB worked with Brazilian weekly Caras to create a special cover featuring actress Giovanna Ewbank. The issue also came with a set of Deep Clean wipes, so readers could rub the makeup off her face.

Studies have shown that when you actually touch and handle a product, you feel a connection to it and are even willing to pay more for it. Or, as DM9’s vice president of media Drian Ferguson puts it to Brazilian publication AdNews, “This interactive piece of press gives consumers the power to star in the campaign. They handle the product, test, prove and evaluate the outcome.”

Design Culture writer Diogo Mattos, for his part, calls the work an “innovation” that reflects what the future of magazine advertising could look like—specifically in the Brazilian market, where he believes executions like this are few and far between. (Our guess is Hansaplast’s foot magazine hasn’t made it into print there yet.)

In the Instagram video below, DM9DDB director Vitor Manzi demonstrates the campaign himself. One thing is for sure: The gunk that comes off is definitely true-to-life.

Ikea Gets Dove-Like With a Mirror That Tells You How Beautiful You Are

Feeling a little down? Don’t worry. Ikea’s new piece of furniture thinks you’re amazing.

The Swedish retailer has introduced a prototype of a mirror in Britain that looks you up and down and (thanks to Kinect technology and some “complex coding”) gives you a robo-compliment, which people appear to be as thrilled to receive as the real thing.

This “Motivational Mirror” is based on very scientific information, commissioned by the retailer itself, which found:

• 49% of Brits receive no compliments in an average week
• 43.6 million people in the U.K. are self-critical of their appearance
• 33% of the nation feel they look their worst before 9 a.m. on a Monday morning

But this mirror tries to fix all that.

Ikea also did research into which specific compliments people would like to hear. Among the top choices were “Your eyes are mesmerizing,” “Have you been working out?” and “Your skin is glowing”—all of which are incorporated into this mirror’s uplifting robo-repertoire.

The retailer demo-ed the mirror in its Wembley store to” raise awareness of how simple solutions in the home can make our daily routines better,” according to the release.

“We all know how that first look in the bathroom or bedroom mirror can determine whether we have a good or bad day,” says Myriam Ruffo, head of bedrooms and bathrooms at Ikea U.K. and Ireland. “That’s why we thought—wouldn’t it be great if the mirror actually told you something positive for a change!

It is a little funny that Ikea is trying to jump into Dove territory. (And yes, the inspirational talking mirror idea has been done before—most notably by the all-female Austin band The Mrs., but also by other marketers.) Still, no real harm done, I suppose?

Just as long as they don’t mass produce this thing. (Worst actual bedroom mirror ever.)

How Real Women Would Actually Respond to a Dove ‘Experiment’

Every time Dove launches a new effort to remind women they're beautiful, the brand seems to pause first to also remind women how much they hate themselves.

A new parody video from comedy troupe Above Average skewers Dove's tear down/build up approach by creating a faux "True Beauty" experiment in which women are asked to look in a mirror and see how they feel about the results.

"Look at yourself in the mirror," the moderator says soothingly. "Do you feel unattractive? I bet you do."

You can watch the video below to see exactly what happens and, most entertainingly, how more realistic women would react to the formulaic "surprise twists" of Dove's recent marketing efforts inspired by its award-winning Real Beauty Sketches.

Most Dove parodies simply recreate the original video with a different outcome, like the Real Beauty Sketches for Men. With this one, Above Average skips the easy gag of satirizing the recent Beauty Patch viral hit and creates its own experiment to show just how far Dove has tilted toward flat-out condescension.

My favorite part is when the woman running the experiment becomes visibly flustered because it's not working out as planned. "Just thank Dove," she angrily tells one of the participants while gesturing to the camera. "Hashtag TrueBeauty. Thank them. We showed you using science!"
