This Audi Emits Nothing but Water Vapor, So Its Billboards Are Made of That Too

Innovative products deserve advertising that itself is innovative—embodying the promise of what’s for sale in the way it’s being sold. This Audi campaign from German agency thjnk does a nice job of that.

The Audi A7 Sportback h-tron uses a fuel cell coupled with a hybrid battery and additional electric motor in the rear. Notably, nothing but water vapor comes out of the exhaust. And so, Audi created billboards that similarly leave nothing behind.

It’s clever and intriguingly produced, though it’s not quite clear how the effect in achieved. In any case, it’s perhaps most reminiscent of 2012’s “Invisible Car” campaign for Mercedes, which also promoted zero-emission fuel-cell technology—by draping the car with an LED “costume” that made it look invisible.

Thjnk Warns of Unruly ‘Mechanics’ for Audi

Berlin-based Thjnk launched a new spot for Audi, reminding viewersof the importance of going to an Audi dealer instead of a random mechanic.

To do so, the agency makes said mechanics seem downright frightening. The spot opens on a mechanic as he sees a lone Audi driving down a desolate road. Soon the car’s “Service due” light goes on and another mechanic perks up. As the car drives on more and more mechanics emerge, until there’s a zombie-like army chasing the car, which makes it into the Audi dealership just in time, ending with the tagline, “Don’t let your Audi fall into the wrong hands.”

The spot, directed by Sebastian Strasser of Radical Media, does a good job of building atmosphere and mimicking the pacing and feel of a horror movie. Intentionally over-the-top, the ad aims not for the typical message of superior service, but “…the monumental showcasing of the eternal struggle between good and evil,” the agency said in a statement. If that sounds like a bit too much, there is something of a self-awareness to the approach, as Thjnk and Audi seem to be in on the joke.

Ikea Uses Poorly Assembled Billboards to Admit Its Furniture Is Hard to Put Together

Everyone else makes fun of how painful it is to assemble Ikea furniture, so why can’t Ikea? And the company does in these fun billboards, from German agency thjnk, that are themselves poorly assembled—to advertise the brand’s assembly service. Such a simple idea.

Thjnk has been doing eye-catching Ikea work for a while, including one of our favorite out-of-home ads of 2014—the RGB billboard that ingeniously turned nine square meters of ad space into 27 square meters.

German Agency Thjnk Dares to Pitch Bono at Cannes…and Wins

Never underestimate the power of chutzpah.

Oddly enough, it took a German ad man to prove that point. One of the last stories from Cannes-Lions making its way into the headlines concerns the bold actions of Michael Trautmann, CEO of German-based Thjnk.

ICYMI, Bono was discussing AIDS awareness and his foundation (RED) when he brought Jony Ive, Apple Design SVP, on stage and gave the backhanded compliment heard ’round the hipster nation. Following the applause and passing of the Kool-Aid at Genius Bars, Trautmann did the unthjnkable.

And it worked.

Ikea’s Family Tree Ads Show the Beds on Which Each New Generation Was Conceived

Ikea would like to remind you that the odds are pretty good your parents produced you by having sex on its furniture.

New print ads from the brand in Germany offer a twist on the family-tree motif, with pictures of Ikea beds—dating back to its first, from the late 1940s—inserted in between generations of ancestors. The tagline is, "Where family starts."

That's based on a fun fact—that 10 percent of Europeans were conceived on one of the brand's beds—unearthed by German agency thjnk, which created the campaign (and also made Ikea's clever space-maximizing RGB billboard earlier this year).

Each ad in the new series also features not just beds but one piece of Ikea furniture designed for another room in the house, because why be boring?

L’agence Thjnk a eu l’excellente idée d’utiliser pour IKEA une surimpression en RVB pour écrire 3 messages différents sur un seul panneau. La marque cherche une nouvelle fois à aménager au maximum l’espace et propose ainsi un concept jouant sur un système d’ampoule, permettant d’alterner les messages.

Painel em RGB da IKEA altera texto conforme a luz

A IKEA costuma defender soluções inteligentes para o melhor aproveitamento de espaços, conceito perfeitamente traduzido pela agência Thjnk e o estúdio I Made This para uma campanha recente na Alemanha. O RGB Billboard é um painel branco, de 9m², com três linhas de texto, escritos em cyan, magenta e amarelo, e três lâmpadas nas cores vermelho, verde e azul. Estes elementos foram o suficiente para criar uma mensagem completa, que muda conforme a luz.

A grande sacada foi aplicar aquela lição básica que a gente aprende na escola: se o painel for iluminado pela lâmpada verde, apenas a linha em magenta pode ser lida. Azul faz o texto em amarelo aparecer, enquanto a luz vermelha revela o que está escrito em azul. Em resumo, um painel de 9m² dá a impressão de medir 27m² – mais ou menos o que os produtos da Ikea fazem.

Tipo do projeto inteligente, que soube usar a simplicidade a seu favor.

Ikea’s Amazing RGB Billboard Is One of the Coolest Ads It’s Ever Made

Outdoor ad geeks, here's your latest bit of brilliance, courtesy of Ikea.

German ad agency Thjnk and production studio I Made This teamed up to create Ikea's "RGB billboard," which—much like Ikea furniture itself—makes the most of some very limited space.

The board features three different headlines superimposed on each other in different colors—cyan, magenta and yellow. At night, the board shines red, green and blue (RGB) lightbulbs on the board, revealing, in turn, the different headlines. Red bulbs illuminate the cyan text; green lights up magenta; and the blue-purple lights make yellow visible.

And that's how you turn nine square meters of ad space into 27 square meters.

It's a delightful little visual trick that embodies Ikea's space-saving message. Now, if only it worked a little better during the day.
